The majority of bus-riding children are injured or killed outside the bus.
Motorists who fail to stop for the flashing red lights and extended stop arm are
responsible for about one-third of pupil deaths outside the bus.
The area around the stopped bus is referred to as the DANGER ZONE.

KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM

A parent/guardian, or another responsible party is required to be at the bus stop each day when the kindergarten students are returned home. Siblings must be at least third grade or older to escort younger siblings from the bus without another responsible party.

For safety purposes, anyone who is receiving a kindergarten student off the bus needs to be on the list in SIS at school. If for some reason the parent cannot make it to the stop and plans on sending someone else, you must notify the Transportation Department at 636-240-3138.

SAFETY PROGRAMS

Bus safety instruction is provided for all elementary school students. Bus evacuation drills are conducted each semester for grades K-8. High school students participate in evacuation drills at the beginning of the school year.

STUDENT CONDUCT ON THE SCHOOL BUS

The safety of students during their transportation to and from school is a responsibility which students and their parents share with bus drivers and school officials. The rules of student conduct and disciplinary policies for failure to observe bus rules will be issued to every student at the beginning of the school year.

OUR GOAL IS TO PROVIDE YOUR CHILD WITH SAFE AND EFFICIENT TRANSPORTATION. THESE ARE ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR TRANSPORTATION?

Students who live more than 1 mile from the school they attend will be provided transportation. The home address of the student determines eligibility.

INELIGIBLE BUS RIDERS (Students Who Live Less Than One Mile From School)

Seats Available - Parents of ineligible bus riders must fill out an application for transportation at the beginning of each school year. You must do this every year. Applications are available at school buildings. Any available seats on buses after school has begun may be assigned to ineligible riders. Certain guidelines apply and there is no guarantee that transportation will be provided.

HOW ARE BUS ASSIGNMENTS MADE?

Eligible riders are assigned to the bus and bus stop nearest their home.  Students must ride their assigned bus unless a bus change has been approved by the school district. Students are allowed one stop in the A.M. and one stop in the P.M.

WHAT IF A STUDENT NEEDS TRANSPORTATION TO/FROM A DISTRICT-APPROVED DAY CARE LOCATION?

Permission to change buses or stops must be obtained through the Transportation office. They will assign a stop. Parents utilizing the services of a day care center should call (636) 240-3138 as early as possible in the summer, but no later than the deadline of August 1, before routes are finalized.

Last-minute requests for bus changes at the beginning of school may result in delays in transportation and inconvenience for parents. To access transportation, babysitter and day care centers must be in the student’s home school attendance area.

EMERGENCY BUS CHANGES DURING THE YEAR

The District’s primary responsibility in transportation is to transport students from their home to school and back home. Students may be permitted to ride a different bus in emergency situations. To arrange for a temporary bus change, the parents should call the Transportation Office at (636)-240-3138. Notes should not be sent to the bus driver or the child’s teacher.

For safety and planning purposes, all changes must be requested at least one (1) day before they are needed to ensure the proper changes are made. For example, for a Wednesday change, parents must call on Tuesday by 2:00 P.M. The call center is available from 9:00 to 2:00. However, if a change is an existing stop on the same bus, this will be accepted up until noon the same day.

BUS ROUTES/STOPS

Students are expected to walk reasonable distances to bus stops.  Loading and unloading will be at assigned stops only.  Students should be at the stop 5 minutes before the scheduled arrival time.
