On April 2, voters in Fort Zumwalt School District will choose two members for the Board of Education. There are six candidates running for two seats, each a three-year term. Voters will vote for TWO. Candidates are listed in order they will appear on the ballot. All information below provided by the candidate.


Name: Mike Swaringim

Length of Residency in Fort Zumwalt School District: 48 Years

Education: Fort Zumwalt High School (1986), University Missouri - St. Louis (1991), Hannibal LaGrange (1988)

Children (including whether they are, or have been Fort Zumwalt students):

Three, all are Fort Zumwalt graduates

Missouri School Boards Association - Advanced Member

Short statement about your reasons for seeking election to the Board of Education and your qualifications for this position: 18-year member of  the Board Of Education seeking to continue my efforts to increase the value of the public education in our community.

Name: Gary Wester

Length of Residency in Fort Zumwalt School District: 10 Years

Education: Masters Chemistry, Bachelors Chemistry, Bachelors Zoology

Two adult children.

Membership in civic, professional organizations, etc.: American Society of Quality; Society for Quality Assurance; Missouri Master Naturalist, Missouri Stream Team

Short statement about your reasons for seeking election to the Board of Education and your qualifications for this position: Our primary responsibility is to educate our children and develop their critical thinking skills to become effective citizens in society. Schools are the foundation of that process.


Name: Garvis M. Pollard, Jr.

Length of Residency in Fort Zumwalt School District: 26 Years

Education: University of Arkansas, Bachelor of Science in Education (1967), Master of Science - Natural Sciences (1971)

Membership in civic, professional organizations, etc.: U.S. Army, 1967-1970 Active Duty, 2nd Lt. to Captain; 18 months Vietnam Platoon Leader, Intelligence Officer; 12 months faculty U.S. Army Intelligence School. Oak Ridge Associated Universities, 1971-1973 Nuclear Science Exhibit Manager and Traveling High School Science Teacher. Economic Development Center of St. Charles County, Member, Incubator Advisory Committee, St. Peters Chamber of Commerce Member, Board of Directors, O’Fallon and Lake St. Louis chambers of commerce member and guest speaker, Junior Achievement of Greater St. Louis Classroom instructor and after-school programs, Sales and Marketing Executives of Metro St. Louis Chapter Vice President and President and Missouri National Education Association retired life member.

Short statement about your reasons for seeking election to the Board of Education and your qualifications for this position: I would like to share my lifetime education, training and experiences with my school district. Fort Zumwalt School District Science and U.S. History Teacher, Hope High School (2005 - 2012), DARE Graduation Guest Speaker, Pheasant Point Elementary. Veterans Day Guest Speaker at Pheasant Point, Twin Chimneys, Ostmann and Dardenne elementary schools. Fifth Grade Camp Counselor, Pheasant Point Elementary. Substitute teacher at middle and high schools (2012 - 2016).

Education: Orchard Farm High School Graduate; Some College - Lindenwood

Children (including whether they are, or have been Fort Zumwalt students):

Three. Two are Fort Zumwalt graduates, one is enrolled in high school.

Membership in civic, professional organizations, etc.: Boy Scout - Cub Scout Leader

Short statement about your reasons for seeking election to the Board of Education and your qualifications for this position: Interested in having a closer role in the development of the school district. Tax payer in district, parent, 15 years on Board of Education


Name: Thomas Emmons

Length of Residency in Fort Zumwalt School District: 17 Years

Education: Fort Zumwalt South High (2000). Graduate studies at Berry College, Rome, GA. Majored in computer science with emphasis in mathematics.

Children (including whether they are, or have been Fort Zumwalt students):

Five. All enrolled in Fort Zumwalt.

Membership in civic, professional organizations, etc.: Active supporter of foundations such as Make-A-Wish, St. Jude’s and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Short statement about your reasons for seeking election to the Board of Education and your qualifications for this position: As a graduate of FZS and with five children starting their education in the district, I have a vested interest in the development of our schools over the next two decades.  I believe we can drive significant advances for our children by advocating for, and restoring power to, our teachers. This will be done by increasing capabilities in the classroom, implementing concepts and policies they see firsthand, and working to become the best paying district in the area.  Our teachers should never feel the need to look to other districts to support their families.
