Superintendent's Update 4.7.21

Dear Fort Zumwalt Community,
Tuesday, voters elected Tommy George, Jr., and Gabriel Helms to the Fort Zumwalt Board of Education. They will be sworn in and begin their three-year terms at the April 15 meeting.
Voters rejected Proposition Strong Schools. While this is disappointing, the Board of Education and district staff are committed to the students and parents in our school district. We are also committed to budget recovery. Staff reductions through attrition, a selective hiring freeze and other budget reductions are some of the cost saving strategies that could be implemented to address our budget shortfall in the short term. Rebuilding our reserves to a healthy level will be a longer process.
The current budget crisis was created by the withholding of state funding over the past two fiscal years. While some of the withheld state funding has been released by the Governor, other withheld funding has not and is unlikely to be recovered. There also has been no definitive word on when the state might release the one-time federal stimulus payments sent to the state for Missouri’s public schools. Nonetheless, we are dedicated to delivering the quality education our community expects with the resources we have available.
Over the next weeks and months we will be working with our community to better understand these results.

Sincerely,
Dr. Bernie DuBray
Superintendent
Fort Zumwalt School District
