The Arts in Fort Zumwalt

The Fort Zumwalt School District has a long tradition of outstanding arts programs. Students are exposed to music and visual art curriculum from the first week of kindergarten and have the opportunity to explore through 12th grade in courses ranging from introductory level to Advanced Placement credit. Participation in the arts, whether in the classroom or in extracurricular activities, develops problem solving skills and fortifies collaboration and creativity.

Each year a number of organizations recognize outstanding work by student artists. Here are the most recent student achievements.

Congratulations to the Fort Zumwalt students who attended the Missouri State Thespians Conference. Each January, actors and stage technicians compete, attend workshops, and have the opportunity to audition for scholarships. Troupes awarded Honor status are recognized for their work on stage, backstage and in the community.

Congratulations to our performers who participated in the annual state thespians conference, including South High's Talia Wright, who was selected to cast and present her original one act, "Love's Root," for the Page to Stage event. Students participate in workshops led by professionals from around the country; compete and perform for colleges on hand as part of the scholarship application process. They also are recognized as school organizations. Each of the four Fort Zumwalt troupes was designated an Honor Troupe for their excellence on stage and in the community.

And two North High staff members were recognized: Troupe Director Theresa Nigus received the Judith Rethwisch Outstanding Theatre Educator of the Year Award, which recognizes a teacher who exemplifies the best qualities of a teacher within their building, district, and community. They represent the very best in Theatre Educators. Assistant Principal Casey Olearnick received the Missouri State Administrator of the Year Award, which recognizes a school administrator or team of administrators for their dedication and efforts to support educational theatre in their building, district and community.
